OXFORD, MISS---
The inaugural Oxford Rhythm Revival is showcasing diverse
musical
talents with sounds ranging from blues to bluegrass, country
to rockabilly, and gospel
to good-old rock and roll. This plethora of sound combines
into one, ultimately creating
the rising-popular and Grammy recognized musical genre
of “Americana.” There’s no
better location for such a soulful vibe than the Mississippi
crossroads of Oxford, where
the Delta blues merges with the rockabilly of the Hill
Country. The festival will kick off Thursday night at
the Lyric, and will pick back up on Saturday. Saturday's
event will
capture that small-town feel with community events such
as music, art, and family
activities throughout the day on the historic Square.
The festivities will continue into the night as performing
musicians take the stages of Taylor’s Pub, Two Stick,
Rooster’s Blues House, and Proud Larry’s.
Come see Grammy-winner
Jimbo Mathus intertwine blues, country, gospel and soul
into
his personal musical style that can rarely be imitated.
Headliner, Memphis native, and
rising star Valerie June will sing her songs recorded
from Manhattan to Hungary back in
the place where it all began. Taylor’s Pub cigar-box
stage, compiled of multiple artists
who will leave an audience stunned by their masterful
play of homemade instruments, combines novelty and nostalgia
to re-create the sounds of the blues foundation.
On June 19th, 2010
these musical acts, along with 40 regional artists, will
raise roofs
and spirits while simultaneously raising funds for the
Oxford Medical Ministries Clinic.
The OMMC is a private, non-profit, community based organization
committed to providing compassionate, quality healthcare
at no charge to uninsured working adults of Lafayette
and Yalobusha counties. The inaugural festival is presented
in cooperation with the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and
the Oxford Tourism Council. The annual festival, predicted
to be the next Double Decker, will become OMMC’s
sole fund raiser. One $25 ticket will
grant unlimited access to the whole event, including the
shows at each of the participating venues.
This festival is a
rare and exciting opportunity for OMMC to raise awareness
in the community, and can, in and of itself, become a
healing tool for the bodies, minds and
spirits of the community Oxford Medical Ministries Clinic
serves. Come be a part of a
starting tradition that will bring memorable music, unforgettable
times, and abundant
charity for years to come.
